A New Perspective on...ME!

Posted by Chama Straw on Jun 24, 2015 3:30:00 PM

For this blog I wanted to switch it up! I'm having one of my best friends actually write it for me!

I wanted the perspective of an outside person and what it's like being around someone with Hypopara as often as she is. This woman has really changed my outlook on my illness and on my life. I'm so blessed to have such strong women in my life.

(I'll actually be reading what she writes at the same time as everyone else, I'm excited to see what she has to say).

Hypoparathyroidism: Welcome to the Rest of my Life

Posted by Chama Straw on May 26, 2015 4:47:51 PM

Friday May 22, 2015, marked my 2 week Natpara anniversary!

I know that this isn't a cure, and I will still have some bumps in the road, but I can actually see some light at the end of this very long tunnel.

I was talking to my mom the other day and I said, "I actually feel like I can have a life again."

Words I never thought I would be able to tell her. What an amazing feeling!

Chronic Illness: Diagnosing a Family

Posted by Chama Straw on Apr 23, 2015 1:30:00 PM

As you know by now, my life forever changed 3 years ago, but I think it changed for the people around me even more.

I had to change my everyday routines to accommodate and adjust to my chronic illness. This meant the life of everyone close to me and around me had to do the same. This change brought on some anger and resentment. Why should their life have to change so much? They didn’t sign up for this. What about them and their feelings?

Determination and Independence: Two traits for chronic illness

Posted by Chama Straw on Mar 31, 2015 2:00:00 PM

There are two words that I live by these days: "Determination" and "Independence". When I was diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism 3 years ago I was more determined than ever to maintain my independence.

I had my thyroidectomy October 14th, 2011 and I had no prior knowledge of hypopara or really any of the risks of having the surgery. When I was discharged 2 days later all I was told was if my face around my mouth went numb to come back right away, but still was told why. I went home and started the healing process (it's not nice having your neck sliced open).

I eventually went back to work which was somewhat easy because I had a desk job and an amazing boss and co-workers. However, I started to notice that my arms and legs always felt like they were asleep - they were always tingling - but none of the doctors ever mentioned it so I kept pushing on.

Letting Go

Posted by Chama Straw on Feb 19, 2015 10:30:00 AM

I made a promise to myself when I agreed to do this blog, that I would be 100% honest. I had no idea how hard it would be being so honest with myself and for the world to read. I have always thought of myself and my life as an open book, but when it comes to living with hypoparathyroidism I shut my book and thought I had to hide this from the world, and part of me still does.

I have spent years being made to feel bad for my illness, and I suffered at the hands of some of the doctor's that were supposed to help me.

I'm No One's Doormat

Posted by Chama Straw on Jan 22, 2015 10:03:00 AM

Prior to my surgery I thought I had it all. I loved my job. I had 2 amazing kids and a wonderful boyfriend. We had family outings, played board games, and spent the warm summer days at the beach. I woke up and, in an instant, it was all gone.

When I got sick I had this weird fantasy that everyone would rally around and help me and care for me. Isn't that what family and friends do? I soon had a wake-up call that this wasn't going to be the case. This led me to believe that maybe the bond I thought I had with them really wasn't that strong. It became very clear very quickly that I was heading into this mostly on my own.

Welcome to my world, I am so excited to have this opportunity to share my life with you. Bear with me and my scatter-brain, I think you'll enjoy the ride.

This is my life, living with Hypoparathyroidism.

I was and still am that girl that would do anything for anyone. I did my time in school but knew once I was done with high school I was done with school. I had a dream and I wanted to do anything I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. I lived my life to the fullest and I loved with everything I had. I've traveled to more places than I could count and I've been in love so many times! I do things big.
